Protecting Your Trees During Winter

Cold winter temperatures and snowy conditions may make you want to stay inside, but it is important that you take a look at the trees in your yard. Trees are designed to withstand the weather but even the healthiest ones are susceptible to winter storm damage. Take a walk around and look for any snapped branches from ice/snow, and high winds. Limbs and branches that overhang the house, driveway, garage, etc. could cause thousands of dollars worth of damage should they break and come down.
If you have young trees on your property, gently shake heavy wet snow from the limbs to avoid breakage.
Rock salt can severely harm trees, so use sparingly and avoid spreading any over tree roots. For trees near the road that would be most affected by traffic salt spray, sweep or rake up any excess.
Watch for our report on preparing your trees for spring, which will be posted in a few weeks.
