What is wrong with my oak tree?

In the month, you may have noticed oak trees on your property or in your community that leafed out green and healthy in spring are now plagued by browning, scorched leaves. While there is always a concern that it may be due to Oak Wilt, a quickly spreading, fatal disease, most cases have shown to be Leaf Scorch.
Leaf Scorch is often a result of environmental factors. With the high temperatures and humidity, coupled with drought stress we have experienced in Central Ohio this summer, the conditions were perfect for Leaf Scorch to develop.
Due to the issue being environmental and not due to disease or infestation, the trees are likely to recover but they may require a little help.
If there has not been sufficient rainfall, take a garden hose and dribble water in a few spots around the base of the affected tree for approximately 15 minutes at each site. Repeat this every few days during periods of drought. We also recommend a fertilization treatment in the fall to provide extra nutrients before the trees enter dormancy.
